Conversion Stories

Lauren Winner, the author of her autobiography, Girl Meets God (2002), discusses her back and forth pull between Judaism and Christianity and the factors that ultimately led her to put her faith in Jesus. Winner went all the way back to her childhood, when she was first named an Orthodox-Jew, all the way to her college life where she met Jesus in her dreams about being a mermaid. The purpose of Winner’s autobiography was to tell her testimony and show people that you do not have to be born into Christianity in order to believe in Jesus. Winner’s intended audience is all of the non-believers, and believers of Christianity.
From my perspective, Girl Meets God offers a unique and deeply personal insight into the struggles of faith and identity. Winner’s journey resonated with me because it showed that faith is not always straightforward—it can be full of doubts, exploration, and transformation. Her willingness to question her beliefs and seek answers through both Judaism and Christianity made me reflect on my own spiritual journey and the importance of keeping an open mind. It also reinforced the idea that faith is a personal experience, shaped by our individual experiences and growth. Winner’s story encouraged me to embrace the uncertainty in my own search for faith, knowing that it is okay to question and evolve over time.
The author uses her personal experiences from her faith journey to show her conversion from being an Orthdox-Jew to a Christian. In the early years of her youth, Winner grew up following the Judaism religion. Winner devoted a majority of her time to reading and educating herself on everything related to Judaism, from wedding traditions to Jewish law. From all of her readings, Winner came to the conclusion that “If the Torah was true, then we should spend all our time reading it, and all our life living by it” (Winner 43). Though Winner believed this for a long time, she became curious of the Christian faith, which led to her learning a lot about Christianity. What finally made her become a full devoted Christian was a dream. The dream came to her when she was in college and was about her being a mermaid for a year. Winner stated that “I knew, as soon as I woke up, that the dream had come from God and it was about the reality of Jesus” (Winner 56). The dream ultimately led to her conversion to Christianity because she experienced living life with Jesus.
